Electrician in Pittsburgh, PA

Most city houses were wired long before today's kitchens, chargers and air conditioners. We bring that wiring up to date, pull the PLI permit and work with Duquesne Light for you.

A Pittsburgh Electrician for the City's Older Houses

Pittsburgh has the oldest housing of any community we serve. Census figures put the median city home at 1942, and nearly half were built in 1939 or earlier. In neighborhoods like Morningside, Central Northside, Polish Hill, Perry North, Highland Park, Lawrenceville and Bloomfield, two out of three houses date to before 1940.

That age shows up behind the walls: cloth wrapped wire, two prong outlets with no ground, small fuse era services and circuits shared by half a floor. Renaissance Electric has worked for Pittsburgh homeowners since 1997. We find what is there, explain it in plain words and give you a written plan with a free estimate before any work starts.

Electrical Work Pittsburgh Homes Need Most

Whole and Partial Rewiring

With so many prewar houses, knob and tube and cloth wire are common here, and rewiring room by room is often the cleanest fix.

Grounding for Old Homes

Two prong outlets in older city houses usually have no ground path. We add one so outlets and surge devices can protect you.

Service Upgrades to 200 Amps

Many city homes still run on 60 or 100 amp service. We replace the mast, meter base and service entrance and coordinate with Duquesne Light.

Panel and Circuit Upgrades

Old fuse boxes and crowded panels get replaced, and new circuits go in for kitchens, laundry and window units.

GFCI and AFCI Outlets

Kitchens, baths and basements in older homes rarely have the protection current code expects. We add it where it counts.

Emergency Electrician

Storm damage, a pulled service drop or a hot panel at night. Call any hour, 7 days a week.

Permits and Power in Pittsburgh

Inside city limits, electrical permits come from the City of Pittsburgh Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections, filed through OneStopPGH. PLI inspects residential electrical permits itself. We file the permit, schedule the PLI inspection and are on site for it.

Duquesne Light serves every address in the city. When a service upgrade needs the meter pulled or the drop reconnected, we arrange it with Duquesne Light so you are not stuck making the calls.

What Pittsburgh Area Homeowners Say

Real Google reviews from our customers.

Eric and Adam were went above and beyond to repair our issue with a downed mast + cable. Was very responsive and made sure an inspector got out to see the repairs were done that day. Would recommend and saved us from spending the night in the dark.

Paul D.

Eric was great! He took time to answer questions and provided detailed information and guidance. He made an extra effort to fit us in quickly. He replaced/updated an old outlet in an old house. The service was done well and efficiently. Very happy with Eric and Renaissance Electric!

Pat B.

Great experience from the first call (answered by a human not an automated system)! We worked with Eric he was on time, professional, efficient and provided explanation for what he was doing. He also made suggestions on other things that appeared unsafe in the home. We will certainly use him in the future if another need arises!

Ashley L.

Nick was wonderful: on time, efficient, and patiently explained the work needed to get us up and running. Great service!

Pittsburgh Electrical Questions

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Pittsburgh?

Most work beyond swapping a device does. City jobs are permitted and inspected by PLI. We pull the permit and handle the inspection as part of the job. Ask for a free estimate.

My city house still has knob and tube. Is that a problem?

Knob and tube has no ground and was never meant for today's loads, and insulation added later can trap its heat. We can trace it and quote a partial or full rewire.

Why do my outlets only have two slots?

They were installed before grounded outlets were standard. We can add a ground or GFCI protection. See grounding for old homes.

Can a row house get a 200 amp service?

Usually yes. The work covers the mast, meter base and panel, and Duquesne Light reconnects the service once the city inspection passes.

Do you come out for emergencies in the city?

Yes. Our emergency electricians answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-888-681-WIRE.

What does a free estimate include?

We look at your panel, service and the problem you called about, explain what we found and give you a written price before any work starts.
