Hot Tub Code, GFCI and Your Panel

NEC Article 680. Pools, spas and hot tubs are covered by Article 680 of the National Electrical Code. Your town's inspector checks the work against it.

Disconnect. Code calls for a disconnect within sight of the hot tub and at least 5 feet from it, so the tub can be shut off safely for service.

GFCI protection. Hot tub and spa circuits must be GFCI protected. We test the GFCI before we leave.

Panel capacity. A hot tub is a large, steady load. If your panel is full or your service is small, we may suggest a service upgrade first.
