LED Lighting Retrofit in Pittsburgh

Old cans, fluorescent kitchen and basement fixtures and garage lights converted to LED, wired right and tested.

LED Lighting Retrofit for Pittsburgh Homes

An LED lighting retrofit swaps the old fluorescent tubes, halogen cans and tired fixtures in your home for LED without tearing open every ceiling. Done right, you get brighter, even light, less heat and far fewer bulb changes. Done wrong, you get flicker, buzzing and a ballast nobody can find later.

Renaissance Electric has handled LED upgrades in Pittsburgh homes since 1997. We also install new recessed lighting and handle light fixture replacement, and every installation carries our lifetime workmanship warranty.

Signs Your Home Is Ready for an LED Lighting Upgrade

  • Kitchen or basement fluorescent tubes that flicker or hum
  • Ballasts in a garage or laundry fixture that keep failing
  • Old halogen or incandescent cans that run hot in the ceiling
  • Yellow, dim light in the basement, garage or laundry room
  • Bulbs you change so often you keep a ladder out
  • LED bulbs that flicker or buzz on an old dimmer

Ballasts, Dimmers and Color in a Home LED Retrofit

Fluorescent to LED conversion in a kitchen, basement or garage fixture comes in two main types. Plug and play tubes run on the old ballast, so the ballast can still fail. Ballast bypass tubes wire straight to line voltage, so we remove the ballast and label the fixture for LED tubes only.

LED lights cut your energy use and the heat in the room, but they are picky about controls. An old dimmer made for incandescent bulbs often causes flicker, so we install dimmers rated for the LED load.

Color matters too. Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms, while a cooler white works well in a garage or laundry room. Simple swaps rarely need a permit; new circuits get one from your borough, township or the City of Pittsburgh. Contact us for a free estimate.

What Affects LED Retrofit Cost

We quote after we see the fixtures, and the estimate is free. These move the number:

  • Number and type of fixtures
  • Retrofit modules or full new fixtures
  • Ceiling height and attic access
  • Ballast bypass or plug and play tubes
  • LED rated dimmers and switches
  • Whether new circuits are needed

What Customers Say About Our LED Lighting Work

Real Google reviews from customers who had LED lighting installed.

Renaissance Electric replaced 4 hardwired under-cabinet fluorescent lights with 4 led lights. The difference is astounding.

Lisa A.

Our basement was dark and all the lights were on different switches. New LED lights were installed that illuminate every inch of the basement and turn on all at once.

Dominique T.

Eric replaced our outdated ceiling lights in our family room with recessed LED lights. He was very strategic with the placement of the lights, trying to avoid shadows, and was thorough in explaining his plans with us.

Joel S.

Additionally, they established power to my detached garage and installed LED light strips and outlets. The work was high quality, and completed on-time and on-budget.

LED Lighting Guides From Our Electricians

LED Lighting Retrofit Questions

Can I put LED tubes in my fluorescent fixture?

Often, yes. The tube has to match the fixture: plug and play tubes keep the ballast, bypass tubes need rewiring.

What is a ballast bypass?

We remove the ballast and wire the sockets straight to power for LED tubes, then label the fixture.

Is it better to retrofit or replace a fixture?

If the housing is solid, a retrofit is usually simpler. Rusted or broken fixtures get replaced with new LED ones.

Why do my new LED lights flicker?

Usually the dimmer or the ballast. We match controls to the LED and fix the cause. See our dimmer guide.

Can my old recessed cans take LED?

Usually, yes. A retrofit module fits most existing cans and runs much cooler. See our guide to converting old can lights to LED.

Do I need a permit for an LED retrofit?

A simple swap usually doesn't. New circuits do, and we pull that permit and schedule the inspection.
