Converting Old Can Lights to LED Retrofit Modules: What Pittsburgh Homeowners Should Know
If your house was built or remodeled any time between 1985 and 2015, odds are you’ve got incandescent or compact-fluorescent recessed cans in the ceiling. They’re hot, they’re dim by modern standards, and they chew through electricity. Converting them to LED retrofit modules is one of the highest-value lighting upgrades you can make to a Pittsburgh home, and it usually takes one afternoon.
What a retrofit module is
A retrofit module (sometimes called a retrofit trim or a trim kit) is an all-in-one LED light, driver, and trim that screws into your existing can housing via the old bulb socket. You don’t remove the can. You don’t open the ceiling. You unscrew the old bulb, remove the old trim, screw an adapter into the socket, and click the new module into place.
The whole swap takes 3 to 5 minutes per can for someone with a ladder and basic hand tools. For a house with 20 cans, that’s about 90 minutes of ladder work.
What you get from the swap
- Lower energy use: a 65-watt incandescent can becomes a 10 to 12-watt LED. Lighting a room with 8 cans drops from 520 watts to 80 watts.
- More light: modern LED retrofits output 700 to 1000 lumens versus about 700 for the old incandescent. The color is also cleaner and more consistent across the array.
- Less heat: LED runs cool. Non-IC cans near plaster or insulation stop being a slow-cooking fire hazard.
- Longer life: 25,000 to 50,000 hours versus 1,000 for incandescent. Practically means you stop climbing the ladder to change bulbs every year.
- Dimming that finally works: pair with an LED-compatible dimmer and you get smooth 100-to-5-percent dimming, which you could never get from a CFL.
A typical Pittsburgh living room with 8 cans saves about $45 to $85 a year in electricity alone. Over 10 years that’s $450 to $850 per room, on a retrofit kit that cost $80 to $160 installed.
Picking the right retrofit module
Three things to check before buying:
- Can size: measure the aperture (opening) of your existing cans. Standard sizes are 4-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch. Modules are sized to match. Most Pittsburgh homes have 6-inch in living areas and 4-inch in bathrooms and hallways.
- Socket adapter type: modules come with an Edison (medium-base, E26) screw adapter by default. Some older cans have GU24 twist-lock sockets and need a different adapter.
- Dimmer compatibility: check the module’s spec sheet against your wall dimmer. Halo and Progress publish full compatibility charts. If your dimmer isn’t on the list, swap the dimmer when you swap the modules.
Brands we install most often: Halo HLB series, Commercial Electric (Home Depot’s house brand, shockingly good for the price), Progress Lighting, and Lithonia. All four are available at the big-box stores in Pittsburgh.
Color temperature decision
We covered this in a separate post, but a quick reminder: 2700K or 3000K for living rooms and bedrooms, 3000K or 3500K for kitchens, 3500K or 4000K for home offices and garages. Most modern modules have a switchable color temperature (2700K / 3000K / 3500K / 4000K / 5000K) with a DIP switch on the back. Flip them all to the same setting before install.
Watch-outs during the swap
Old non-IC cans with insulation touching them: LED retrofit modules generate much less heat, so the old clearance requirement around insulation is much less critical. Still, if you’re in the attic during the swap and you see insulation jammed against the can, pull it back a couple inches. Gives the driver better cooling and extends its life.
Trim rings that don’t sit flush: sometimes the old can has a warped trim ring that the new module can’t seat against. A little silicone caulk around the edge, carefully applied, closes the gap and keeps dust and bugs out of the housing.
Cans with broken clip springs: some 20-year-old cans have lost the torsion spring clips that hold the trim. The new module won’t hold. Replace the springs ($2 to $5 per set at any electrical supply) or the whole can if the housing is too deteriorated.
Mixed-brand modules in the same room: don’t. Two modules labeled 3000K from different brands can visibly differ. Buy all modules for a room from one brand, one bin if possible.
When a retrofit isn’t enough
A few situations where we recommend replacing the whole can instead of retrofitting:
- The existing can is non-IC and the module won’t reduce the heat enough for the install (rare with modern modules, but it happens in some attics)
- The old can has corroded connections or is full of rust
- You want to change the can spacing or add more cans (more fixtures = more holes in the ceiling anyway)
- The existing cans are too shallow for the new module’s driver depth
Even in those cases, it’s still often cheaper than starting from scratch with a new plaster ceiling.
DIY or pro?
Straight one-for-one retrofits in accessible ceilings are the easiest DIY project in electrical work. If you’re comfortable on a ladder, you can do a 10-can house in an afternoon. We get called in when the dimmers need swapping, when cans are in vaulted ceilings that need a scaffold, or when the customer wants the whole thing handled.
Typical pro price: $25 to $45 per can for labor, plus the modules. A 20-can conversion with dimmer swaps usually runs $700 to $1,200 installed, parts and labor all in. Ask for a bulk quote if you’re doing multiple rooms at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert old recessed can lights to LED without replacing the housing?
Yes — LED retrofit modules screw into the existing socket and fit inside most standard 5" and 6" housings. Installation takes 5 minutes per can and cuts energy use by 75–85% versus incandescent.
Are LED retrofit kits safe in old non-IC cans?
Yes, and they actually make non-IC cans safer. Modern LED retrofits run far cooler than the incandescent bulbs they replace, so the airspace requirement non-IC housings need becomes less critical. Non-IC cans buried in insulation should still be addressed, but LED retrofit dramatically reduces overheating risk.
How much do LED retrofit modules cost per light?
Expect $15–40 per retrofit module at retail, with 3000K dimmable modules from Halo, Commercial Electric, and Sylvania hitting the sweet spot. Our labor to convert a whole-home 16–20 can set takes 2–3 hours and includes a dimmer swap if needed.
