Grounding Older Homes in Pittsburgh

Two prong outlets, ungrounded wiring and old grounding systems brought up to code.

Grounding Older Homes the Right Way

Many Pittsburgh houses were wired before grounded outlets were standard. Two prong outlets, cloth wiring and old metal boxes with no ground wire are common. A ground gives stray current a safe path, so a fault trips the breaker instead of shocking someone or damaging electronics.

Renaissance Electric has worked on older Pittsburgh homes since 1997. Some homes need GFCI outlets, some need rewiring, and grounding also matters for whole home surge protection. Every installation carries our lifetime workmanship warranty.

Ungrounded Wiring, GFCI Options and Water Pipe Bonding

Swapping a two prong outlet for a three prong one without a ground is not allowed, and it hides the problem. NEC 406.4(D) gives three code options for ungrounded circuits: a new two prong outlet, a GFCI outlet labeled No Equipment Ground, or a three prong outlet protected by a GFCI and labeled GFCI Protected and No Equipment Ground. A GFCI protects people from shock, but it is not a ground, so surge protectors and some electronics still need a real one.

NEC 250.130(C) lets us run a new ground wire back to the panel or another proper ground point when walls allow it.

At the service, the grounding electrode system usually means ground rods plus the metal water pipe, and NEC 250.104 requires metal water piping to be bonded. Plastic pipe repairs can break that path. Contact us with questions.

What Affects Grounding Cost in an Older Home

We quote after we test the house, and the estimate is free. These move the number:

  • Number of ungrounded outlets
  • Ground wire or GFCI protection
  • Plaster walls and access
  • Condition of ground rods and bonding
  • Whether circuits need rewiring
  • Panel condition and permits

What Homeowners Say About Our Work in Older Homes

Real Google reviews from customers with older homes and outlet problems.

Eric came out and helped with open grounds on some outlets due to previous owners shotty work. Was able to diagnose the issue and saved me a ton of money by not having to replace all my outlets.

Brad B.

This team is extremely responsive and takes their time explaining what needs to be done and in terms that you can understand it. I have used them 3 times updating and repairing electrical either due to an old house or damage from storms.

Amy S.

We worked with Eric he was on time, professional, efficient and provided explanation for what he was doing. He also made suggestions on other things that appeared unsafe in the home.

Ashley L.

They also updated all the outlets in the basement and changed a couple upstairs. Answered all our questions and provided information that we were unaware of regarding our electrical panel.

Grounding Older Homes Questions

Can I just put in three prong outlets?

Not without a ground or GFCI protection. An ungrounded three prong outlet is a code violation.

Is a GFCI as good as a ground?

It protects people from shock, but it doesn't give surge protectors or electronics a ground path.

Do I have to rewire to ground my house?

Not always. Sometimes we can add a ground wire, and sometimes GFCI protection is the right fix.

What does open ground mean on a tester?

The outlet has no working ground. It may never have had one, or a connection failed.

Why bond the water pipe?

So metal piping can't become energized. NEC 250.104 requires it.

Does grounding matter for surge protection?

Yes. A surge device needs a good ground. See surge protection.
