Addition and Renovation Electrical in Pittsburgh

Electrical for Additions and Renovations in Pittsburgh

New rooms need new circuits. Whether you finish a basement or build an addition, the wiring has to be planned around your panel and service.

Renaissance Electric and Power Systems wires renovations across Pittsburgh, the North Hills and the South Hills. We check the load first, then add a subpanel, a panel upgrade or a service upgrade only if the house needs it. Every installation is backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty.

Signs Your Renovation Needs Electrical Work

  • You are finishing a basement or attic
  • You are adding a room, sunroom or second story
  • Your panel has no open breaker spaces
  • The new space is far from the main panel
  • Walls are coming down and old wiring will be exposed
  • You plan to add an EV charger or new appliances

How Addition and Renovation Electrical Work Goes

1. Free Estimate

We review your plans and look at the panel and service.

2. Load Check

We add up the new load to see if your service can carry it.

3. Permit

We pull the electrical permit with your town.

4. Rough In

Circuits, boxes and any subpanel go in before insulation and drywall.

5. Inspection

The inspector checks the rough in before the walls close.

6. Finish and Final

We set devices and fixtures, test, and meet the final inspection.

Renovation and Addition Electrical We Install

Finished Basement Wiring

Outlets, lighting and circuits for a new living space.

Addition Wiring

Complete wiring for new rooms and second stories.

Subpanels

More breaker space close to the new rooms.

Panel Upgrades

A new main panel when the old one is full or outdated.

Service Upgrades

100 to 200 amp service when the load check comes up short.

Recessed Lighting

LED cans for basements, additions and new ceilings.

Load Checks, Subpanels and Permits

Load check. Before we add circuits, we run a load calculation under NEC Article 220. It tells us whether your service can carry the new rooms, heat, appliances and lighting.

Subpanel or upgrade. If the service has room but the panel is full, a subpanel near the addition is often enough. If the service is short, we plan a service upgrade and coordinate with Duquesne Light.

New wiring rules. New bedrooms and living spaces need AFCI protection, and basement outlets need GFCI. We wire to the current code your town enforces.

Permits. We pull the permit through the City of Pittsburgh or your borough or township and meet the inspector at rough in and final.

What Affects the Cost of Renovation Electrical

The estimate is free. These things move the number:

  • Square footage of the new space
  • Number of circuits and lights
  • Subpanel or panel upgrade needed
  • Service upgrade needed
  • Distance from the main panel
  • Open framing or finished walls
  • Old wiring found along the way
  • Permit requirements in your town

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say

Real Google reviews from customers who had basements, permits and new wiring done.

Renaissance responded promptly, created a plan to address the issues (including arrangement for all permits and inspections needed), and completed the work in a timely and professional manner. They were fair and transparent about pricing.

William H.

Let me stress: these guys know exactly what they're doing, soup to nuts, and they take no shortcuts regarding Pittsburgh's code and inspections. They do it right.

Robert F.

New LED lights were installed that illuminate every inch of the basement and turn on all at once. They also updated all the outlets in the basement and changed a couple upstairs.

Dominique T.

Additionally, they established power to my detached garage and installed LED light strips and outlets. The work was high quality, and completed on-time and on-budget.

Addition and Renovation Electrical Questions

Do I need a permit to finish my basement?

Yes, new electrical work in a finished basement needs a permit. We pull it and meet the inspector.

Will my addition need a new panel?

Not always. A load check shows whether a subpanel is enough or the panel or service needs an upgrade.

What is a subpanel?

A smaller panel fed from the main panel that adds breaker space close to the new rooms.

When should the electrician come in?

After framing and before insulation and drywall, so the rough in can be inspected.

Can you work with my general contractor?

Yes. We schedule around the framing, insulation and drywall crews.

Do you coordinate with Duquesne Light?

Yes, when a service upgrade is part of the job.

What if you find old wiring?

We tell you what we found and quote it separately. See our rewiring page.
