Adding Recessed Lighting Without Attic Access: How Remodel Cans Work in Pittsburgh Homes

Want to add recessed lights to a first-floor ceiling that has a finished room directly above it? Or to a plaster ceiling with no attic access? Or to a cathedral ceiling with no crawl space? Remodel cans (also called retrofit housings or IC-rated remodel housings) are the answer. They’re designed to be installed from below the ceiling through the finished drywall or plaster, with no need to access the space above.

This is the type of install that turns a multi-day wire-fishing nightmare into an afternoon job. Here’s how it actually works.

How remodel cans differ from new-construction

New-construction housings attach to the joists with mounting bars before the ceiling goes up. You can’t install them retroactively without opening the ceiling.

Remodel cans are designed to be pushed up through a hole in the finished ceiling and held in place by spring clips that grip the ceiling material from above. No joist attachment needed. No ceiling demolition needed.

The installer cuts a round hole, fishes the wire, pushes the housing up through the hole, and the clips snap out to grip the backside of the ceiling. Trim then covers the edge. Done in 15 minutes per can under good conditions.

Cutting the hole

The can manufacturer provides a paper template for the hole size. Most 6-inch cans need a 6.5-inch hole. Most 4-inch cans need a 4.5-inch hole. Cut the hole with a hole saw or a drywall saw, depending on the ceiling material.

Pittsburgh plaster ceilings are where remodel installs get interesting. A hole saw on plaster-over-wood-lath tends to crack the surrounding plaster, especially if the plaster is old and brittle. A few tricks help:

  • Score the outline with a utility knife first to prevent the drywall paper (or plaster face) from tearing beyond the hole
  • Use a plaster-rated hole saw or a rotary tool with a cutting wheel
  • Work slowly and let the tool cut rather than forcing it through
  • Consider using a 5/8 spade bit to drill four small holes around the circumference as relief before cutting

In the worst cases, we cut a small inspection hole first to confirm what’s behind the ceiling (joist, wire, duct, nothing) before committing to the full fixture cut.

Fishing the wire

The hard part of any remodel install is getting power to the hole. The wire has to travel from an existing circuit, through joist bays, to the new fixture location. Depending on ceiling construction, options include:

  • Open joist bays (parallel runs): run the wire the length of one bay, which gets you to any light in that bay
  • Drilling through joists (perpendicular runs): requires drilling 1-inch holes at the center of each joist. Legal and safe but requires accessing the holes, which can mean cutting drywall patches
  • Using existing fixture boxes as junctions: if there’s an existing ceiling fixture near the new can, we can often splice the new wire at that box and fish to the new hole
  • Fishing from above on the floor above: cut a small hole in the floor above (under a rug or in a closet), fish the wire, then patch the small floor hole. Sometimes the path of least resistance

Good remodel installs look like no work was done. The only visible sign is the new can itself. Getting to that finish takes planning, not just tools.

Fixture depth matters

Not every ceiling has enough space above it for every can. Before buying, measure:

  • Distance from ceiling to the nearest obstruction above (floor joist, duct, pipe)
  • Distance to the next-nearest obstruction (in case there’s a sag or variation)
  • Whether there’s insulation that would need to be pushed back

Low-profile remodel housings exist specifically for this. Some are only 2 to 3 inches tall and fit where a standard housing won’t. The Halo HLB6R and Commercial Electric Ultra Slim are good low-profile options.

Common Pittsburgh scenarios

Finished basement with drywall ceiling, joists and ductwork above: remodel cans work great. We map duct and joist locations with a stud finder and avoid placing cans where they’d conflict.

First-floor living room below a finished bedroom: remodel cans from below, with the wire fished through joist bays. No access needed to the bedroom floor.

Older plaster ceiling in a Shadyside or Squirrel Hill home: careful hole cutting is the key. We use specialized cutters and work slowly. Sometimes we recommend having drywall or plaster repair crew on standby if the ceiling is particularly fragile.

Cathedral ceiling with no attic: sloped-ceiling remodel cans exist for this, though the options are more limited. The wire usually has to come up the wall and along the rafter bay, which means one wall penetration and a careful route.

What we usually tell customers

Remodel installs in Pittsburgh homes take 30 to 60 minutes per can when everything goes right. They take 2 to 4 hours per can when they don’t. The variable is the path for the wire.

For a straightforward 4-can living room install where the ceiling joists run the right direction and there’s an existing switch to tap into, figure $600 to $1,000 total installed. For a 4-can install in a plaster ceiling with no nearby switch and obstructions to route around, figure $1,500 to $2,400.

We always walk the site, look at the ceiling material, check the joist direction with a stud finder, and locate the nearest existing circuit before quoting. Cans themselves are cheap. Labor to get the wire to them is where the cost lives.

When to skip remodel and open the ceiling

If you’re adding more than 6 cans to one room, and the ceiling is in rough shape anyway, sometimes cutting a long access strip in the ceiling, installing new-construction housings, and patching the strip is faster and cheaper than 6 individual remodel fishing jobs.
