Pre-Wiring for an EV Charger Before You Buy the Car: A Pittsburgh Buyer’s Guide

You’re thinking about an EV. Maybe in six months, maybe next year, maybe when the lease on your current car runs out. You’re getting other electrical work done, or finishing the basement, or upgrading the panel. This is the right moment to run the EV charger wiring, even if the car isn’t here yet.

Pre-wiring is cheaper, less disruptive, and opens more options than waiting until the car shows up. Here’s how we approach it.

Why pre-wire

  1. Labor stacking: the electrician is already on-site for the other work. Running one extra circuit adds an hour, not a separate service call.
  2. Wall access: if we’re in your basement or garage for another project, drywall is open, conduit is accessible, and you don’t pay to re-open walls later.
  3. Panel planning: we can reserve two slots in the panel and leave a capped junction box at the garage. Ready for the car whenever it arrives.
  4. Resale value: houses listed with EV charger pre-wiring sell faster in Pittsburgh’s more EV-friendly neighborhoods (Point Breeze, Regent Square, Mount Lebanon). Realtors call it out in listings.
  5. Permit-in-advance: one permit covers the pre-wire plus final install, saving $150 to $250 later.

What a pre-wire actually looks like

We typically install:

  • A 50-amp or 60-amp double-pole breaker in the panel (or space reserved for one)
  • 6-gauge or 8-gauge conductors run to the future charger location
  • A 4×4 weatherproof junction box mounted where the charger will go, capped off
  • Conduit where exposed, Romex where concealed in walls
  • A blank cover on the junction box until the charger is mounted

When you buy the car, we come back, mount the charger to the box, land the wires on the unit, turn the breaker on, and test. Usually a 1-hour visit.

How to pick the charger location without a car

This is where people get hung up. You don’t know yet which EV you’ll buy, and the charge port could be anywhere:

  • Tesla: left rear quarter panel
  • Ford Lightning: driver’s side front fender
  • Rivian: driver’s side rear
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Kia EV6: right rear quarter panel
  • Chevy Equinox EV: driver’s side front

Our advice: mount the charger between the stalls in a two-car garage, or on the wall where the car’s front or driver’s side will typically park. J1772 cables are 18 to 25 feet long, which gives you plenty of reach from a centered mount.

In a single-car garage or a parking pad, mount the charger at the end of the run, roughly where the middle of the car would be when parked. That way any car with any port location can reach.

Capacity decisions

For a pre-wire, we recommend spec’ing for the highest amperage you’re likely to need. Going from 40-amp to 60-amp wire costs $50 to $150 in material. Going back and re-pulling wire because you bought a Lightning and need 48 amps costs $500 to $1,200 in labor.

Most Pittsburgh pre-wires are spec’d at 50 amps (to support 40 amps continuous, which covers most EVs at a practical charge speed) or 60 amps (to support 48 amps continuous for the bigger trucks and SUVs).

Panel considerations

If your panel is near capacity, a pre-wire is the right time to think about a panel upgrade or a load-managed setup. If we’re already in the panel, a 200-amp upgrade costs $2,800 to $4,500 for a straight swap. If you wait and add an EV later, you’ll pay for the panel upgrade as its own project.

Alternatively, a load-managed charger (Emporia, Wallbox, ChargePoint Flex) lets you add EV charging even on a 100-amp panel by throttling the car when the house draws more power. Pre-wire for either option and you have flexibility when the car actually arrives.

Common pre-wire scenarios we’ve done recently

  • Panel upgrade in Fox Chapel: owner upgraded from 100A to 200A for AC and range reasons. While we were there, we pulled a 50-amp run to the garage, capped off, and reserved the slot. Added $380 to the project.
  • Basement finish in Mount Washington: homeowner finishing the basement for a home office. We ran EV wiring through the same conduit paths for $420 extra on a $6,000 project. Car showed up 9 months later, final install was 45 minutes.
  • Kitchen remodel in Shadyside: not directly related, but because we were already adding circuits to the panel we ran the EV circuit and reserved slots. Added $500.

When pre-wiring doesn’t make sense

If you’re certain you won’t buy an EV in the next 3 to 5 years, or if you’re about to move, skip it. Pre-wire has a payback period only if you actually need it within a reasonable window. Otherwise it’s cost that sits capped in a box.

If your panel isn’t up to the job and isn’t getting upgraded, pre-wiring to a fake circuit doesn’t help. We’ll tell you straight if your situation means waiting is the smarter move.

Yes. The cost of running the circuit and mounting the receptacle is roughly the same whether or not the charger is on the wall, and you lock in today’s prices and a clean install path. Pre-wiring also adds resale value — buyers shopping EVs see a pre-wired garage as a major plus.

What should I ask for when pre-wiring an EV charger circuit?

A 60-amp double-pole breaker, #6 AWG copper or #4 AWG aluminum wire, Schedule 40 PVC or EMT conduit, and either a NEMA 14-50 receptacle or a hardwired whip coiled behind a blank cover. Ask for 48A continuous loading so you’re not capped when you buy a faster-charging EV later.

Does pre-wiring cost less than adding the charger later?

The circuit cost is the same either way, but pre-wiring during an existing remodel, panel upgrade, or new-build phase avoids opening walls twice. If the garage is unfinished, pre-wiring during drywall is significantly cheaper than retrofitting into a finished garage.
